Amidst the increasing requirement of robotic assistance in almost all sectors of life, affordable automation in medical applications and human assistance is one of the leading directions of current research interests.

About the Experts:

Professor Gurvinder Virk, has more than 30 years’ experience in international research collaboration, teaching, administration, finance and project management with technical expertise in Control theory and control applications, Climbing and walking robots, Olfactory navigation of mobile robots, Wearable robots, Robot safety for medical/non-medical robots and Renewable energy systems. Former Professor at Universities of Gavle & KTH (Sweden) and Massey (NZ), Universities of Leeds & Portsmouth (UK) and currently Adjunct Professor at IIT Ropar, India and Trustee of CLAWAR UK (registered charity). Chairman of several international robot standardisation groups (ISO TC299/WG2 Personal care robot safety, 2006-2016; IEC SC62A & ISO TC299 JWG9 Medical electrical equipment and systems using robotic technology; ISO TC299/WG6 Modularity of service robots; ISO TC299/SG1 Gaps and structure: euRobotics Topic Group Standardisation Coordinator for H2020, 2013-present). He has > 360 publications, 16 successfully supervised PhDs, >100 invited seminars, FIET, CEng, FIMA, CMath, FCIBSE, MIEEE, £20M research funding from UK and EU in over 50 research projects,  and currently member of boards of several journals on robotics (Industrial Robot, Robotics and autonomous systems,  Advanced robotic systems).


Mr. Burkhard Zimmermann, Chief Quality Officer and member of the Executive Board at Hocoma AG, a founding member of IISART.

Since 2004 working for the global market leader for the development, manufacturing and marketing of robotic and sensor based devices for functional movement therapy; since 2005 heading the quality management department; Member of the Executive Board, International standardization committees:

  • Active founding member of IEC TC 62A JWG 9 including precursor Study Group of Medical care robots WG 7 of ISO TC 184
  • Joint working group leader and founding member of IEC, TC 62D JWG 36; since 2015;

Member of ISO/TC 210 “Quality management and corresponding general aspects for medical devices”, ISO/TC 299 “Robots and robotic devices”; WG 02 & JWG 05 & WG 06 IEC TC 62 delegate to ACART, Liaison officer between IEC TC 62 and ISO TC 173.

Scientists from R&D Labs, Industrial personal, Academicians and Students working and developing medical instruments and robotic mechanisms will be benefited from the workshop – focusing at ‘standardization’.
